◆ This course emphasizes helping people by answering their questions. Being friendly and helpful is more important than speaking correctly.
◆ To succeed in this course, you need some English language skills. If you have trouble understanding this paragraph, then you will need to work extra-hard. During class, I will talk mostly in English. You may ask for help in Japanese.
◆ You will learn new words. You will talk a lot. You will feel confident.
到達目標 Course Goals
◆ This section explains what you will learn in this course.
◆ After finishing this course, you will be able to:
* Meet people, shake hands, introduce yourself, and ask some questions.
* Give walking directions on or near campus, with or without using a map.
* Suggest and explain sightseeing spots on or near campus.
◆ Depending on how quickly we progress, after finishing this course, you may also be able to:
* Explain the names, ingredients, cooking methods, and eating techniques of common Japanese food and drink.
* Explain restaurant menus written in Japanese.
* Explain how to order food, pay, eat, and bus dishes at the campus cafeteria. ("Bus" means bringing plates and trays back to the kitchen.)
授業計画 Course Schedule
◆ This section explains what you will do in class each week.
◆ 1st class: You will learn (a) this course's design, objectives, and method, (b) how you will participate in class, (c) why, how, and when to do assignments, (d) how you will be graded, and (e) who your instructor and conversation partners are. You will receive your first assignment, due by the 2nd class. I will speak Japanese during the 1st class, and mostly English the rest of the semester.
◆ 2nd class: You will learn (a) how to find out what people want to know when they ask questions, and (b) how to choose and arrange the information you will give in your answers. You will practice specific tasks, such as giving walking directions on campus. Each week, you will study new words and expressions. These must be memorized. I will give you handouts with example phrases, which you will use at home to prepare sentences for the next class. As the tasks become complex, you will use more words to describe exactly what you want to say, and your conversations will become longer.
◆ 3rd-14th classes: The class format is the same as the 2nd class. You and a conversation partner will ask questions and answer them. When we become confident with one task (such as giving walking directions on campus), we will continue with another (such as explaining sightseeing spots on campus).
◆ 15th-16th classes: You will review and demonstrate long conversations covering various topics. Your final exam will be partly oral and partly written.
準備学習(予習・復習)等の内容と分量 Homework
◆ This section explains what you will do outside of class each week.
◆ Each week, you will receive assignments in class. At home, you will study new words and expressions, and prepare sentences for the next class. You will bring the assignments to class for me to grade. You must prepare and memorize the new words and expressions so that you can use them in class. You may study with friends outside of class.
◆ The following paragraph applies to all language courses including this course:
Grading System
◆ This section explains what you will do to receive grades and credit.
◆ You grades will be determined primarily by how well you answer questions, and secondarily by how well you prepare for class.
◆ The key criterion is "Did you satisfy the person who asked the question?" Your sentences do not need to be perfect English, but the information in them must be accurate and complete. For instance, if somebody asks "What is this sushi made of?" you may not answer "It's a kind of fish" because although the sentence is in perfect English, it does not give all the information being asked for. You may say "Tuna", which is excellent information, although it is not good English.
◆ During class, you will grade your conversation partners, and they will grade you. Some conversation partners are students, others are teaching assistants or instructors. Conversation points will form 60 percent of your grade. Some classes, such as classes with long conversations, are worth more points. If you are absent, you receive no points for that class period.
◆ Your assignments will be graded. Assignment points will form 30 percent of your grade. I will not accept late assignments.
◆ Your final exam will form 10 percent of your grade. You must take the final. If you miss the final, you must see me for an interview. If you miss both the final and the make-up interview, you will NOT receive course credit.
◆ Letter grades will be given in 13-point intervals as follows: 100 >= "shuu" >= 87, 86 >= "yuu" >=74, 73 >= "ryou" >= 61, 60 >= "ka" >= 48, 47 >= "fuka" >= 0.
◆ **IMPORTANT!** You must take the final exam. No matter how high your scores, if you miss the final, you fail the course.
