Rotary clubs

"You only have one chance to say 'no' at Rotary," said Bill Mayhood, then president of the Stanford Area Rotary Club. "And that's when you're invited to join." Bill later became district governor.

They let me visit their Tuesday dinner meetings. (My best meal of the week!) I met many terrific people I never would have elsewhere. One person made bingo games for fundraisers. He was one of the first people to commercially use desktop publishing. Another person was a dentist. Yet another person ran a deli. My mentor Barry Smith was (and still is) in stocks and bonds. He was a former scholarship recepient, cared for me deeply, and taught me valuable lessons.

To this day, Rotary has a special place in my heart. Although I have never been a member, I am a member in spirit. Hence, I never refuse a request to talk at a Rotary meeting.

My research career started in 1986 by the generous support of the Rotary Foundation, the Kawasaki Yurigaoka Rotary Club, and the (then) Stanford Area Rotary Club.

Although never a member, I remain peripherally involved with Rotary. Their 4-way test guides my judgment.

Is it the truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
